January 27, 2018 marks the day the WDA club airplane VANS RV-12 N337JG earned its airworthiness! It was a phenomenal first flight! It was very responsive on the controls. Only the lightest of pressure on the rudder and it turns like a dream. We need to figure out a slight inconvenience with the intercom where the crew gets cut out whenever there is radio conversation. The prop needs some balancing, a little pitch, and a little work on the idle speed and the carbs need to be synced. Other than that, it flew like a dream! More to come as we continue to fly off the required 5 hours and fine tune any errors found.

Flyers,
This was a busy weekend on the RV. We were able to get the stab cables set, found and fixed a small fuel leak, got the Dynon Wifi working, set the trim tab, finished cotter pins in the tail section, set throttle stops, made standoffs for cables, brake lines, fuel lines, etc. throughout the fuselage and engine, put the tail cone on, put the data pouch in and put various required stickers throughout. We also sent off the Application for Airworthiness. Hopefully we will get that by week end. Planning to weigh today. More soon. 1/17/18
First Engine Run up today!! We got the strobes fitted up to the wing and installed firmly, closed up the cockpit, installed the carpeting, and the seats. We sealed the back glass with fuel tank sealant and made canopy extensions. The ELT is installed. We sandblasted the canopy handle and painted it black to match the interior better (it was grey/white). The canopy latch and handle is installed now. Today was even more exciting, we purged the oil, added coolant, found and installed missed rivets. Then we pulled the airplane out of the hangar and did the first engine run. Ran it up, did a few mag checks, found and fixed some issues. Taxied around for around 20 minutes and broke the brakes in. Still some more things to tidy up on the airplane, but we are trying to schedule the airworthiness for around the 25th. 1/10/2018
We worked til late last night to try and get the brakes to purge. We replaced the lines, rebuilt master cylinder (found nothing wrong with it upon inspection), but still getting air in the lines. Today we are working with Matco to figure out what is causing the air???.... 1/8/2018
The RV12 Club Plane, N337JG, is getting closer to being done...but as all you builders out there know, each time you think you are close, so much more comes up needing to be done. Right now we are struggling with brake lines. The previous builder put the brakes and lines in and we have tried to bleed them to no avail. After 3 days of purging the lines only to find new air appearing at the Master Cylinder, we have decided to install 1/8" lines in place of the 1/4" lines and to rebuild each of the four Master Cylinders. We are working on the pitch problem. We all wondered why the incidence of the stab, the angle it makes relative to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage, seemed to have so little pitch down. Upon researching, we have found that the previous builder had not yet set the stops (we thought they had been set). So, that is also in the works. The close-out canopy seals have arrived and will be installed very soon along with the sealing of the back glass, the wing seals, step stickers, creating and placing the N-number. I foresee a test run of the engine by next week. I plan to send in paperwork to the FAA to request the DAR inspection for airworthiness by the end of the month. Are you excited? Cause I am! Let's get flying! |
